How to Read Sports Betting Odds

Sports betting odds tell you two things: how much you stand to win on a wager and the implied probability of the outcome. Kansas sportsbooks default to American odds (e.g., -110, +250), but every operator lets you switch to decimal or fractional in settings. Reading odds is the single most important skill in sports betting.

American Odds Explained

A negative number (e.g., -150) shows how much you must risk to win $100. A positive number (e.g., +200) shows how much you win on a $100 risk. -150 means risk $150 to win $100. +200 means risk $100 to win $200. Even-money is +100 (or -100). The "minus" side is the favorite, the "plus" side is the underdog.

Implied Probability

Convert odds to implied probability to spot value: for negative odds, probability = (-odds) / (-odds + 100). For positive odds, probability = 100 / (odds + 100). A -150 favorite implies a 60% win probability. A +200 underdog implies 33.3%. If your own assessment of the win probability exceeds the implied probability, the bet has positive expected value.

Decimal Odds

Decimal odds (popular in Europe) show the total return per $1 wagered including the stake. Decimal 1.91 ≈ -110 American. Decimal 3.00 = +200. Conversion: decimal = (American/100) + 1 for positive, or (100/-American) + 1 for negative.

The Vig (Juice)

Sportsbooks build a margin into every line — the "vig" or "juice." A typical -110 / -110 spread market has implied probabilities summing to ~104.8%, the extra 4.8% is the vig. Lower vig markets (e.g., -105 / -105) are more bettor-friendly. bet365 and DraftKings frequently price at reduced juice during promos.

How to Read Sports Betting Odds FAQ

What does -110 mean in betting?

-110 odds mean you must risk $110 to win $100. -110 is the standard "juiced" line for point spreads and totals at most US sportsbooks, including all seven Kansas operators.

Are negative odds favorites or underdogs?

Negative American odds (e.g., -200) indicate the favorite — the team or outcome more likely to occur. Positive odds (e.g., +200) indicate the underdog.

How do I convert American odds to implied probability?

For negative odds: |odds| / (|odds| + 100). For positive odds: 100 / (odds + 100). Example: -150 → 150/250 = 60%.
